Sometimes I’ll be in the grocery store shopping for something mundane, like tomatoes, and a certain song will come on that will just transport me to another time. And there I am, standing in the aisle among all the vegetables, getting goosebumps.
Are you like me in this way? I hope I’m not the only one. I am so happy when I encounter something or someone great from my past - and not just a song, but a childhood toy, a familiar smell, or a book I thought was out of print. We are a conglomeration of all our experiences, but it’s hard to continually remember them. Even the good ones. That’s why all these encounters are beneficial, because they carry with them such fantastic memories. As some might say, we get “all the feels.” And yet what a difference they can make as we age, because they represent something greater: a part of us we may think is gone is actually alive and well. Though it’s temporarily forgotten, it’s still very much woven into the history of our being.

I love it when this happens! I was at some sort of festival a couple of years ago, and there was a stand with homemade canned goods. I distinctly remember them having pickled beets and I asked if they were good. I was offered a sample, and as soon as I tasted it, I was transported back to my childhood when my aunt would home can her own pickled beets. Ahh, it was heavenly. That memory was crystal clear in my mind, like I really was back in that moment.

This was really sweet and it actually did bring back fond memories of when I was a kid. And you're right, those memories are usually triggered by something like a smell. This morning as I drove my kids to school I passed this huge pond that has trees and cat tails and very tall grass all around and I reminded me of these fields behind all the home where I lived that I used to run through and there was a creek and it looked like a big wheat field. I had good feelings associated with that memory. So it's kind of funny that I stumbled upon your post!

Alexandra, Thanks so much for sharing! What a great memory - nature is amazing. And you are right - smell will do it! (Do you know I still think of Christmas when I smell scotch tape? ha ha! All the years of wrapping up gifts with that stuff!)

I am the same way, and certain scents make me think of different memories as well.

Music definitely transports me back to specific points of time in my life. The grocery store is a good place to hear a variety of music from different time periods outside of the 3 stations I listen to in my car. It is amazing how vivid the memories come when a song comes on. One of life's little pleasures.

I have been in this kind of state several times as several places remind me of different scenarios and encounters

That happens to me whenever I see Pepsi in glass bottles! Remembering dragging those things back to the store to retrieve our bottle deposits and then starting over...and that icy cold goodness (when it had cane sugar and HFCS) on a hot summer day. Great memories~
